Two Griswold Student Athletes Recognized at Banquet For Being Scholars As Well

The Scholar Athlete program annually recognizes 2 high school seniors, one boy and one girl from each member high school from the CIAC whose academic and athletic careers have been exemplary and whose personal standards and achievements are a model to others, and possess high level of integrity, self discipline and courage.  That is exactly how it reads as far as qualifications to receive the award.

Over 4,000 senior student athletes have been awarded this distinction and has become the premier event to recognize student excellence in academics and athletics.  Over 1,600 people attend the event each year.

This years recipients from Griswold High School were seniors Brooke Rainville and Devin Mitchell.

Brooke Rainville plays basketball at GHS as well as being the starting first basemen for the undefeated Wolverines Softball squad.  In a brief conversation with Rainville’s mother, Jennifer, she said “it is a very big honor to be at the event every school in CT picks one Male & one Female senior class athlete with exceptional academics to be rewarded we were thrilled and to listen to the speakers from past awards were inspiring.”  She also stated that Brooke was very humble to receive the award.  She was right as mom’s usually are!  I had an opportunity to speak with Brooke as well and asked her how she found out about the award.  She stated “I was called down to the office and I was a little nervous about going to the office even though I didn’t do anything wrong, but you never know!”  Rainville said that when she arrived at the office her parents, Coach Arremony, Mrs. Palonen, and Mr. Cravinho were all in there and that’s when she found out.  Brooke did say that it’s nice to get the recognition that she’s worked  so hard for, and that it was a good feeling.

Parents weren’t the only ones proud of their kids.  GHS Principal Erin Palonen said she was happy to attend the formal event and see Devin and Brooke awarded and celebrated and she enjoyed the evening with them and their parents.  Athletic Director Steve Cravinho talked about the sports the award winners played.  Brooke, which was already mentioned plays volleyball and softball and Mitchell plays soccer, fencing, and track.

Rainville was asked where she placed in the class as far as rank and she thought it was around #15 out of 136.  Her favorite class right now is Anatomy because “We are dissecting things right now.”

Devin Mitchell will be featured in another report since he was not available for comment at the time of this writing.
